The Precariat (2023)

The Precariat doormat by Amelia Dowling is a critique of insecure work within the creative industries. This work was exhibited at Counihan & Seventh gallery in 2023 as part of the Real Job exhibition program, curated by Madeleine Thornton-Smith.

The artist places the word Precariat on a curved doormat. Drawing on experience of having been a precariat worker, a term which is a blend of ‘precarious’ and ‘proletariat’ (popularised by the British economist Guy Standing), the artist takes aim at dysfunctional and unsustainable working conditions within the arts.
